Concrete surface preparation is the critical first step in any floor coating, overlay, or polishing project. The International Concrete Repair Institute defines nine Concrete Surface Profiles ranging from CSP 1 through CSP 9, each representing a different degree of surface roughness. Every coating system requires a specific CSP range for proper adhesion — applying a coating over an improperly profiled surface is the single most common cause of floor coating failure in commercial and industrial facilities. The primary methods of mechanical surface preparation are diamond grinding, shot blasting, and scarification. Diamond grinding produces CSP 1 through 3 and is the standard preparation for thin-film coatings, sealers, and polished concrete. Shot blasting produces CSP 3 through 8 and is preferred for thick-build epoxy and urethane systems in large open areas. Scarification produces CSP 6 through 9 and is used for removing thick existing coatings or severely deteriorated concrete surfaces. Beyond mechanical profiling, surface preparation includes moisture testing, crack repair, joint filling, and removal of contaminants such as oils, curing compounds, adhesives, and existing coatings. Modern preparation equipment uses integrated HEPA dust collection systems, making the process virtually dustless and suitable for occupied facilities. A thorough preparation process typically represents 30 to 50 percent of the total project cost — a reflection of its importance to the long-term performance of the finished floor.
